Applying DTF transfers can sometimes present challenges. A frequent question is: "Why is my heat transfer not sticking?" The answer often lies in not following key steps properly, which can affect the final result. Below are some common mistakes, problems encountered when applying DTF transfers, along with ironing tips to help avoid them.
Incorrect Temperature Setting
One of the most common issues is using the wrong temperature on your iron or heat press. If the temperature is too low, the transfer won’t adhere properly. If it’s too high, the transfer may get damaged.
Ironing tip: Use the recommended temperature for the fabric, such as 120°C for polyester.
Creases or Moisture in the Fabric
Creases or moisture in the fabric can prevent the transfer from adhering smoothly.
Tip: Preheat the garment before applying the transfer to remove creases and moisture. Preheating for a short time ensures a smooth surface and better results.
Bubbles or Wrinkles in the Transfer
Bubbles or wrinkles occur when the fabric or transfer isn’t flat. If the fabric folds or the transfer isn’t applied evenly, the printed image may end up with unsightly bubbles or wrinkles. These imperfections not only affect the appearance but also reduce the durability of the transfer.
Tip: Iron the fabric before applying the transfer. Ensure the DTF transfer lies flat on the fabric for a smooth application.
Transfer Does Not Release Properly
A common problem with DTF printing is that the transfer does not adhere properly to the fabric. This can happen if the temperature, pressure or pressing time is not set optimally.
Temperatures that are too low do not activate the adhesive enough, while too short a pressing time does not allow enough time for a good bond to form between the transfer and the fabric. As a result, the transfer will remain loose around the edges or in certain areas and may lift off easily.
Not enough pressure
For a clean transfer, it is important to apply even pressure. Especially with the iron, it is easy to apply too little pressure and the design will only partially adhere or come off.
Tip: For better DTF adhesion to the fabric, press the iron evenly and firmly onto the entire design.
Transfer time too short
If you do not heat the DTF transfer long enough, the design will not adhere evenly to the fabric.
Ironing tip: Make sure you always press the iron or press on the design for the recommended time. Typical ironing time is 30 to 40 seconds, depending on fabric and transfer type.

Removing the transfer too quickly
Patience is key. Many people remove the DTF film too soon, before the design has cooled down completely. This can damage, distort, or partially remove the design.
Tip: Always wait for the transfer paper to cool completely before carefully removing it.
Fabric Incompatibilities
Some fabrics react differently to DTF transfers. If the material is not suitable for DTF printing, the design may not adhere properly or may fade.
The most common mistakes made when applying DTF transfers are incorrect temperature, uneven pressure, or removing the film too early. By keeping these points in mind and following the instructions carefully, you will increase the longevity of your design.
