history of size labels

History of Size Labels

The history of size labels is closely linked to the Industrial Revolution and the development of the fashion industry. Today, they accompany us on almost every garment, but their history goes back a long way. How have these small but important pieces of fabric evolved over time?

19th Century: The Beginnings of Sizing

In the 19th century, the industrial revolution led to a change in the textile industry. Until then, it was common to make clothes to measure, without the need for standardized sizes. With the introduction of mass production, the need for standardized sizes grew. The first attempts to standardize clothing were made, and manufacturers began to produce different sizes for large groups of customers. At this time, however, there were no standardized labels, only handwritten markings or simple stamps on the textiles.

Early 20th Century: Standardization and the First Labels

At the beginning of the 20th century, sizing was further standardized. The first size labels, as we know them today, appeared at this time. Manufacturers began to label their garments with fixed sizes to simplify the selling process. However, size information was still often hand-stitched into garments or printed on simple pieces of fabric. Gradually, the label became an integral part of clothing production.

Mid-20th Century: Introduction of International Standards

After World War II, international trade grew and there was a need for uniform size standards worldwide. Different countries developed their own systems, which sometimes led to confusion, especially when exporting. With the introduction of standardized size labels using S, M and L, manufacturers were able to better serve the international market. Since then, size labels have been found on almost every garment.

Today: Size Labels in All Areas

Today, size labels are used in almost all areas of textile production. From fashion to sportswear to workwear, size labels are indispensable. They help the customer find the right size quickly and make production and distribution easier for the manufacturer. Over the centuries, they have evolved from simple markings to standardized labels that are recognized worldwide.
