There are many ways to attach printed labels to garments, depending on the intended use and preferences. The three most common methods are sewing on, sewing in and ironing on. Each of these options has its own advantages and is suitable for different projects.
Sewing on
Sewing on is the classic method of applying printed labels. This method is used when you want the labels to be visible on the outside of a garment, for example, brand labels. A sewing machine or needle and thread are required to sew on a label. It is important to position the label accurately and sew it in place all the way around to prevent it from slipping. You can either sew neatly around the edge of the label or use decorative stitching to highlight the design. In our video "How to Sew on Cotton Labels" you can see four different ways of affixing labels.
Sewing in
Sewing in labels is especially suitable for care and size information, as it allows multiple details to be included compactly, often on both the front and back. Sew-in labels can often be integrated into seams in a discreet location, making them more durable and long-lasting. Typically, the printed labels are attached to the inside of the garment. You simply sew them into the side or back seam. To do this, place the label between the fabric layers and sew it in during the construction of the garment. This way, the label is securely and discreetly anchored in the fabric.
Ironing on
Ironing on labels is a quick and easy way to attach them. This method is particularly handy when sewing equipment is not to hand. Iron-on labels have a special adhesive on the back that is activated by heat. To iron on, place the label on the desired area and press down with a hot iron for a few seconds. Make sure you press the iron evenly onto the label to ensure good adhesion. This method is ideal if you want to apply the label quickly and easily. At Wunderlabel, you can choose from DTF neck labels, DTF iron-on transfers, and DTF name labels.
Which application method is right for you depends on your project! Want to embellish your label with creative stitching? Sewing it on is the way to go. For a discreet placement in a side seam, sewing it in is the best method. If you're looking for a quick and easy option, iron-on labels are ideal.
