Get started right away and knit this simple yet beautiful round scarf!

Materials

  • Yarn: Schachenmayr Bravo Originals 100 % polyacrylic 50 g ca. 133 m
  • Gauge with a 3.5 mm circular needle: 22 stitches and 30 rows per 10 cm
  • Faux leather label with the name of your child

How many stitches do you need for the scarf?

Knitting clothes for kids isn’t that easy when it comes to estimating the number of stitches you will need. It all depends on the size of your child and whether you want to wrap the scarf around once.
The finished scarf will be 62 cm long and 12 cm wide. If you are making the scarf for a toddler, you can wrap it around once to get a tighter fit. Basically, the size of the scarf is suitable for all school children.

Concerning the question of how many stitches you need for the scarf:
You need a total of 130 stitches to knit this scarf for beginners. We recommend using 3.5 mm circular needles so that 10 cm amount to 22 stitches. You will be working in stockinette stitch.

Knitting the scarf

For the first step in our free tutorial on how to knit a scarf for beginners, start with 130 stitches of red yarn and connect them to form a ring. Make sure that the stitches on the circular needle don’t get twisted in order to create an even edge.

For a more interesting color pattern, switch colors after 13 rows and work the next 12 rows using white yarn. After that, switch to blue yarn for the next 11 rows. Once you have finished those steps, you can finish by loosely binding off all of the stitches and darning in the loose threads.
Finally, sew on a faux leather label with your child’s name.

Tip 1

You can easily vary this round scarf in many different ways. If your child is a sports fan, they can proudly wear their favorite team colors. Add to that a matching hat and you have a full set that is cozy and warm in the winter months.

Tip 2

If you want to knit a slightly wider round scarf, simply increase the amount of stitches you make per color. You can also stretch the scarf a bit to make it wrap around twice.
On your needles, get set, go!
