How to knit socks

How to knit socks

Would you like to knit some simple socks? Then Wunderlabel is the place for you. We show you how to easily knit thin socks in our illustrated step-by-step guide. Socks are usually knitted using 5 double-pointed needles and knitting in a round. The stitches are cast on evenly on four needles. The fifth needle is the one you work with. You knit in rounds from top to bottom.

Material for knitting socks: Woll Butt Aqua

  • 75 % virgin wool, 25 % polyamide 100 g = ca. 420 m
  • 36 stitches / 44 rows = 10 cm (according to manufacturer)
  • Knitted with 3 mm needle (bamboo) this amounts to 36 stitches/42 rows = 10 cm
  • 2 fabric woven name labels with an individual logo from Wunderlabel

Knitting the sock cuff

Cast on 64 stitches and divide evenly on 4 needles (16 stitches per needle) and knit the cuff for the desired length (17 cm).

For the cuff, alternate between 2 knit stitches and 2 purl stitches for 25 rounds (6 cm). Then work rounds in knit stitch. After that, continue with the heel.

Heel length

Transfer the stitches from the 1st and 4th needles onto another needle and make knit stitches (32 stitches), turn, then make purl stitches on the way back. Repeat for 20 rows.

Divide the heel stitches into three parts and decrease rows by working in stockinette stitch. Knit the entire first part and the second part up until the last stitch, 21 stitches. Slip this last stitch knitwise, knit the following stitch knitwise and pass the slipped stitch over that last stitch, then turn. Next, slip the 1st stitch, purl up to the last stitch of the second part and purl together the last stitch with the next stitch, turn. Continue knitting in this pattern. Once all stitches have been decreased, you have finished the heel cap, knit one final right side row.

Picking up the heel stitches

Evenly divide the stitches of the heel cap on 2 needles, the middle is the beginning of the round and the rear middle. Next, pick up the required number of stitches from the running bars of the heel length, 16 stitches. Knit the stitches of the 2nd and 3rd needles, again, pick up 16 stitches from the running bars and knit until the rear middle. In the next round, knit the stitches you just picked up in the previous round by knitting through the back loop.

Gusset decrease

You have reached the strongest part of the foot and now have more stitches on the 1st and 4th needles than on the 2nd and 3rd needles. In the next few rounds, you will decrease the stitches again by knitting a wedge. To do this, knit together two stitches at the end of the 1st needle. At the start of the 4th needle, decrease 2 stitches by slipping and passing over (slip 1 stitch knitwise, knit 1 stitch, then pass slipped stitch over the knit stitch). Next, knit 2 rounds. Repeat the decrease until you have the same number of stitches on all needles (16 stitches per needle). After that, continue with knit stitch.

Decrease to make the toe of the sock

After a foot length of ca. 17 cm, start working on the toe. We will make a toe decrease. Knit the stitches of the 1st needle up to the last 3 stitches, knit 2 stitches together, knit 1 stitch. On the 2nd needle, knit 1 stitch, decrease 2 stitches by slipping and passing over, knit the remaining stitches on the needle. On the 3rd needle, make the same decrease as on the 1st needle, and on the 4th needle, make the same decrease as on the 2nd needle.

After the 1st decrease round, work in knit stitch for 3 rounds, after the 2nd and 3rd round of decreases, work in knit stitch for 2 rounds each, after the 4th, 5th, and 6th round of decreases, work in knit stitch for 1 round each. Next, make decreases in every round without non-decrease rounds in between, until there are only 8 stitches left. Sew stitches together with a double strand and sew up strand.
