In this article, we look at the different materials and production methods for name labels. We will show you how you can make name labels yourself and how they are produced by specialized label manufacturers such as Wunderlabel. The following advantages and disadvantages will help you find the right name label.
DIY Name Labels: Options, Advantages and Disadvantages
There are several ways to make your own name badges at home. Here we show you a few options: Some can be made with simple household utensils, others require a little more skill.
- Printed name labels
Materials: Printer, label paper, computer
Process: Design the labels on the computer and print them out on label paper. Cut out the labels and stick or iron them onto the desired items.
- Fabric labels for sewing on
Materials: Fabric, sewing machine, thread, textile marker
Process: Cut the fabric into small name labels, label them with a fabric marker and sew them onto the clothing or other textiles.
- Name labels with a cutting machine
Materials: Special cutting machine, vinyl or iron-on foil, transfer foil, computer
Process: Create your name tag using the design software or select a template. Place the vinyl or iron-on film on the cutting mat and load the cutter. The device cuts out the design. You can then transfer the cut-out design to the desired items using a transfer film or iron your design onto textiles.
- Name labels with transfer paper
Materials: Transfer paper, inkjet printer, scissors, iron or transfer press, computer
Process: Create your design on the computer and then print it onto the transfer paper using an inkjet printer. Cut the printed transfer film into the desired label shape. Finally, you can place the transfer film on the desired item and transfer it using an iron or transfer press.
- Quick labeling with masking tape
Materials: Masking tape or washi tape, felt-tip pens, scissors
Process: Cut the masking tape or washi tape to the desired size and label it with your name.
Advantages of DIY name labels:
- Enjoy the creative manufacturing process
- Cost efficiency, as there are no production and shipping costs.
- Fast availability
- No minimum order quantities
- Create unique designs
Disadvantages of DIY name labels:
- High acquisition costs with varying quality, depending on the professionalism of the labels
- Lack of professional appearance
- Creativity reaches its practical limits: Lack of material, too much time or lack of design skills
- Low durability
These disadvantages make it clear that although producing your own name labels can be a flexible and cost-effective solution, it often does not offer the quality and professionalism of a specialized label manufacturer.

Production of name labels at Wunderlabel
At Wunderlabel, the production process for name labels differs depending on the type of name labels. We offer three categories of name labels: Stickers, Iron-on labels and Sew-on labels. However, all of our products go through the following steps:
Design creation and selection: Customers can choose from various text types and symbols in our professional online design tool or upload their own designs. Our staff then prepares the designs for production.
Material selection: Depending on the type of label, the customer can choose between different materials: Fabric, plastic, paper. For stickers, for example, customers can choose from plain paper, kraft paper, and coated paper.
After production - quality control and shipping: All labels undergo rigorous quality control before the manufacturer packages and ships them to the customer.

How the products differ in the manufacturing process
Name Stickers
With coating: For waterproof stickers, a digital printer prints on polypropylene film. The printer produces vivid colors and bright images. Cutting machines then pre-cut the stickers on the sheets so that the consumer can easily peel them off later.
Plain paper and kraft paper: Wunderlabel produces the stickers using a digital printing process on high-quality material. We then seal the stickers to fix the color. A cutting machine cuts these stickers to the desired size.
Iron-on labels
PU name labels: These labels are made from a soft, flexible polyurethane material. These labels arrive at the factory already in the respective sizes and are provided with a thermal adhesive on the back. The manufacturer then prints them.
DTF name labels: Direct-to-film technology enables vibrant colors and detailed designs. The DTF printer prints the design onto a special transfer film using water-based ink. A cutting machine then cuts the transfer film to the desired size.
Woven name labels for ironing on: Weaving machines weave the polyester yarn into labels. A thermal adhesive is then applied to these and finally a cutting machine cuts them to the desired size.
Fabric name labels for sewing on
Woven name labels for sewing on: A loom produces these labels from damask and then cuts them into individual pieces. The consumer can easily sew them into textiles.
Color printed name labels: Here the customer can choose between 100% satin polyester or imitation cotton. The cotton imitation is made of 100% polyester, but has the color and texture of cotton. Both are printed with sublimation ink, which ensures vibrant colors and sharp details. A machine then cuts the labels to the desired size using a hot-cutting process.
Single-color printed name labels with text and symbol: Thermal transfer printing in the desired color is the optimal solution for single-color printed labels. After printing, the manufacturer cuts them individually using a hot-cutting process. This ensures that they do not fray later on.
Do it yourself or order it?
The idea of labeling your own objects with names is not new from a historical perspective. Centuries ago, people marked their possessions to identify them and protect them from loss. Today, an entire industry has developed from this, offering diverse and specialized solutions for name labels. Customers can choose between homemade and professionally produced labels. Producing name labels yourself can be creative and personal, but is often time-consuming and not of professional quality. Ordering from a specialist company like Wunderlabel can be a simple, quick and high quality alternative. With a wide range of personalization options and materials, you're sure to find the right name label.
