They may seem complicated at first, but after you make the first one, these folded fabric stars are addicting to make. We love that you can change the look by using different types of fabrics and prints to create your own unique design. The finished stars measure 9 x 9 cm (3.5 x 3.5 in.). Let’s get started!
You will need:
- Fabric in your choice of colours

Cut strips of fabric measuring 8 x 30 cm (3 x 12 in) – you will need four strips per star.
Fold the strips in half lengthwise, wrong sides together, and press. Unfold and then fold the long edges in to the centre, press again and then refold so that the raw edges are hidden inside the strip – it should look like double-fold bias tape.
Place the strips together in a cross shape, so that each strip goes under one another and over the other (see picture). Make sure the ends are all roughly the same length.
Referring to the picture, fold strips B, D and F over the upper strips. When you reach strip H, you will need to slide it under strip B. Your strips should now form a square and hold together when you slide them all towards the centre. Tighten the square up by gently tugging on the ends of the strips and press.
Flip the ornament over and fold the longer ends of the strips together as before – again, you will need to tuck the last strip under the first one. Tug everything tight and press again.
Fold each point of the star into a triangle by first folding the strip outwards at a 45° angle and then downwards at a 45° angle. Next, fold the point in half and press.
Trim off the ends of the strips so they finish a little short of the centre line of the star. Tuck the leftover ends of the strips into the centre of the star. Sew on a loop of embroidery thread or string to hang your ornaments up.
