Applying direct-to-film (DTF) transfers is an easy way to transfer custom designs to garments. Whether using an iron or heat press, the proper technique and temperature are critical to achieving a clean and durable result.
Here are the steps for both methods in detail.
How to Apply DTF Transfers with an Iron
1. Heat the iron to a medium setting. The ideal temperature depends on the fabric: the standard range is 110 °C to 150 °C. For delicate materials like polyester or softshell, aim for 120 °C to 125 °C. Make sure to turn off the steam function.
2. Pre-iron the garment for a few seconds to remove any creases and moisture.
3. Place the DTF film on the garment with the printed side facing down.
4. Put a piece of parchment paper between the iron and the film.
5. Iron the film for 30 to 40 seconds, applying firm pressure. For delicate fabrics, such as polyester or softshell, 12 seconds may be enough.
6. Remove the parchment paper and let the film cool for at least 10 minutes. Then, carefully peel off the film. If it doesn't lift cleanly, repeat the process on any problem areas.
7. Gently peel off the film.
8. To secure the image, place the parchment paper back over it and iron for another 5 to 10 seconds.
Heat Press Instructions
1. Set the press to the appropriate temperature (between 110 °C and 150 °C as standard, between 120 °C and 125 °C for more delicate materials) and allow it to heat up completely.
2. Place the garment in the press and heat briefly to remove wrinkles and moisture.
3. Place the DTF film on the fabric with the printed side down.
4. Place parchment paper between the film and the press.
5. Press the design for 10 to 12 seconds.
6. Remove the parchment paper and allow the transfer to cool completely.
How to Press DTF Transfers: Hints and Tips
- Wait at least 24 hours before washing or stretching the garment.
- You can then wash the garment at up to 60 °C. The recommended spin speed is 600-900 rpm.
- Drying is allowed if the garment is turned inside out.
- Iron the image from the reverse side only to preserve the durability of the DTF transfer.
