• 1963

  Jil Sander graduates from the Krefeld School of Textiles in Germany, gaining a basic knowledge of textile technology.

  Jil studies as a foreign exchange student at the University of California, Los Angeles, and works as a fashion editor for McCall's Magazine in New York.

• 1964

  Jil returns to Germany following the death of her father and works as a writer for the German magazines Constanze and Petra.

• 1968

  Joins the Jil Sander fashion house in Hamburg, Germany, and opens her first boutique, selling her own designs alongside established European designs by Thierry Mugler and Sonia Rykiel. This marks the beginning of her career in fashion.

• 1973

  Jil Sander launches her first women's collection under her own name, establishing her brand identity and gaining recognition for her minimalist style.

• 1975

  This acquisition seems promising at first, but leads to creative conflicts, resulting in her abrupt resignation as Chairwoman and Chief Creative Designer of Jil Sander AG due to confrontations with Prada CEO Patrizio Bertelli. She is replaced by the Italian designer Rudolf Paglialunga.

• 2003

  Demonstrating her resilience and commitment to her vision, Jil Sander returns to the company as chief designer and partner after her non-compete clause expires.

• 2004

  Jil Sander leaves the company again in November after further differences with Bertelli.

  Raf Simons succeeds Jil as creative director.

  Change Capital Partners buys the label from the Prada Group.

  Onward Holdings Co. Ltd. acquires Jil Sander.

  With her new fashion consultancy, Jil Sander enters into a partnership with Fast Retailing to design womenswear and menswear collections for Uniqlo under the +J brand, which becomes a huge success and introduces her minimalist aesthetic to a wider audience. On October 1, she launches the first +J collection worldwide for the fall-winter 2009-2010 season.

• 2011

  Jil Sander's +J collection for the Fall/Winter 2010 season wins the Brit Insurance Design Award in the Fashion category, presented by the Design Museum London, one of the most prestigious design awards.

  

• 2012

  Jil Sander returns to the label as creative director for the third time, demonstrating her enduring influence on fashion and the brand's continued relevance. Jil Sander returns to her namesake house in 2012, succeeding Raf Simons.

• 2013

  Jil Sander announces her departure from the Jil Sander brand for the last time after the presentation of her Spring/Summer collection, closing a significant chapter in her career.
