Size Labels

Size labels are small labels that can be worked into or affixed to clothing to indicate size. They are useful for manufacturers and customers alike, providing a quick and easy way to select the right size. Whether you produce fashion for children, adults or specialty niches, size tags are essential.

Types of Clothing Size Labels

At Wunderlabel you can choose between different types of size laels. Each format meets different needs:

- Standard: These are the most common sizes such as XS, S, M, L, XL, XXL. They are perfect for garments that have these universal sizes.

- Numerical: Most commonly found on women's and children's clothing, these labels use numbers to indicate sizes, such as 36, 38, 40, 42, or 0, 4, 8, 12. They are especially useful if you prefer accurate size information. It is important to note that these sizes vary in an international context and the numbers in e.g. EU, US, UK stand for different measurements. Our blog post on international size labels (with helpful charts) will help you convert sizes.

- One Size: For garments intended for all sizes, we have "one size" labels in stock, which clearly state that the piece fits all body sizes. Read more about this in our blog post: "One Size - More Than a Clothing Size"

- Customizable: At Wunderlabel you can fully customize clothing labels. Add whichever size indication you wish as well as your branding to create a unique design.

Materials for Custom Size Tags

Our size tags are made from high-quality materials that ensure comfort and durability. There are several options depending on your needs and style:

- Woven labels: These are made of polyester, which is extremely durable. They are ideal for long-term wear and a stylish look

- Printed labels: In satin, cotton, synthetic cotton, or Tyvek. Printed labels are softer and are ideal for garments where comfort is a priority.

- DTF Transfers: This modern transfer technique allows you to apply labels directly onto fabric, leaving only the printed design on the garment—no extra fabric or backing.

- Eco-friendly options of size labels: For environmentally conscious brands, we also offer OEKO-TEX® Standard polyester labels that are tested for harmful substances and are environmentally friendly.

What are the Benefits of Professional Size Labels?

Firstly, size labels make shopping easier for customers. A reliable  system and clear labeling allow them to quickly find the right fit, saving time in the process. They also enhance your brand’s professionalism and trustworthiness, as a well-designed label conveys quality and attention to detail. In addition, they simplify organizing and sorting items in your store or warehouse, helping to reduce returns by guiding customers to the correct product more easily—resulting in less confusion and happier customers.

Attaching Size Labels to Fabric

Your labels are ready to apply as soon as they arrive. Here are several easy ways to attach them to your textiles:
- Sew on: Probably the most classic method. You can apply the labels to the inside of clothes by hand or with a sewing machine.

- Sew in: This method integrates the label directly into the seam to give a clean and unobtrusive result.

- Iron on: A quick and easy option of applying labels. This method is ideal for short runs or DIY projects. For example, DTF transfers can be applied with an iron or a heat press.

- Adhesive: Self-adhesive labels (stickers) are also a useful option. They can be applied quickly and are a popular option for accessories.

Which method is best for you depends entirely on your preferences and the look you want. In our "How to Sew in Size Labels" YouTube video, we give you 4 tips to follow to make sure your label sticks securely.

Label Regulations in the USA

In the U.S., there is no federally mandated regulation that specifically requires size labels on every item. However, there are legal requirements regarding the labeling of apparel which are enforced by The Federal Trade Commission (FTC). The Textile Fiber Products Identification Act and the Care Labeling Rule are particularly important.
While these laws primarily require labeling of textiles and care instructions, the rules for size labels are less clearly defined. In practice, however, they have become essential because they provide important information to customers and are expected as part of proper labeling. Failure to include them can lead to misunderstandings and possible consumer complaints, which could ultimately have negative consequences for the manufacturer.

The following points are essential:
Clarity and legibility: Size labels must be clear and permanently legible, even after use or care.

Consumer protection: Size information must not be misleading to avoid misunderstandings and possible legal problems.

International requirements: When exporting to other countries, local labeling and size requirements must be met.

If you are exporting or selling clothing to the U.S., you need to make sure that your sizing information is accurate and meets the expectations of American customers. The labels should also not be misleading, as this could lead to legal problems. In summary, size labels are not required by law, but they are a benchmark of transparency and consumer protection.

What are clothing size labels made from?

Size labels can be made from a variety of materials. Wunderlabel offers polyester, satin, cotton, imitation cotton, and Tyvek.

What are the typical color and measurement guidelines for a size label?

There is no universal guideline; this varies greatly by brand and individual needs, especially for custom apparel. Many brands prefer woven labels that enhance the design of their product as well as the size information. The colors of the labels are often chosen to match the brand identity to ensure a consistent look. There are no hard and fast rules for sizing, but labels should be clearly visible and legible without detracting from the overall design and distracting the customer.
