Genuine leather is a type of leather that is made from the lower layers of animal hides, such as cowhide, sheepskin or goat skin. The top layers of the hide are generally used to make higher quality leather goods such as full-grain leather, while the lower layers, which are thicker and tougher, are used to make genuine leather.
Genuine leather is also sometimes referred to as "split leather," as it is created by splitting the lower layers of the hide away from the top layers. It is then treated and finished to create a smooth, uniform surface that can be used for a variety of products, including shoes, belts, jackets, and furniture.
While genuine leather is not as high quality as premium leather types, it is still a durable and long-lasting material that can provide good value for consumers looking for a more affordable leather option. However, it's important to note that not all genuine leather products are created equal, and the quality can vary depending on the specific tanning and finishing processes used.
The use of leather can be traced back to primitive man. Animals were hunted for food and their hides were used for clothing, shoes and shelter. Tombs discovered in Egypt dating back to 5000 B.C. featured wall art and artifacts depicting the use of leather for buckets, bottles, military equipment, clothing and sandals. The Greeks are credited with creating a process using leaves and tree barks soaked in water to preserve leather. This process is what we know today as vegetable tanned leather. Due to the ability to preserve leather, it became a well established trade in Greece around 500 B.C.
Today, animal hides are a by-product of the meat, dairy and wool industries. These hides are then processed to supply a variety of leather types to varying leather industries. Worldwide, roughly half of all leather is used to make footwear, about 25% is used for clothing and leather goods and approximately 15% is for upholstery in the furniture and automotive markets.
Once raw leather is processed, it is used by a many different industries for a variety of products:
Leather labels are popular due to their classic and other unique characteristics:
Our genuine leather labels are made using a CO2 laser. This precise method laser-engraves the leather label design according to your exact specifications. The leather is also cut using laser technology.
Due to leather being a natural material, the thickness and color of the labels can vary. Our genuine leather labels are made from 100% genuine cowhide, aside from the color orange which is goat hide.
It is recommended that leather labels are not washed. Leather can split if folded.
